Course Description

Join us for a conversation with Lindsey Madison, CPD, Special Education Teacher, and disability consultant. Her teaching career was inspired by her brother who had (what they called at the time) “mental retardation.” Today he would be classified as “Intellectually Disabled-Mild.” Through him, she learned the challenges, barriers, and stigmas facing people with disabilities. She also learned about resilience, opportunities, and superpowers within the disability community.

Lindsey will share how those experiences led her to a teaching career working with students with learning disabilities. Too often, disability inclusion focuses on hiring and accommodation. But, like every minority or other underrepresented group, that is just a first step. One in four adults has some type of disability, visible and/or invisible. A disability is not an indicator of ability as a leader, co-worker, or colleague, and the goal of this conversation is to drive more inclusion for people with disabilities and dismantle the barriers they face in the workplace. We hope you join the conversation!

Learning Objectives:

  • Determine the importance of disability inclusion in the workplace

  • Recall the history of the terminology used to identify people with disabilities

  • Describe the relationship dynamics involved in working with people with disabilities
