Course Description

When most tax professionals think of household employment, they think of state and federal tax calculations and employment tax filings. However, Bill of Rights legislation for domestic workers in many states and hundreds of state and municipal wage-and-hour-law nuances have made the labor law side of household employment arguably more complex than the tax side.

When clients hire domestic workers (i.e., nannies, home health aides, personal assistants, and housekeepers), they take on several additional essential employer responsibilities. These requirements that apply to household employers are also different from those that apply in the commercial world, and they span several disciplines—payroll, tax, insurance, and labor law.

New emergency laws are being passed daily to help employees impacted by COVID-19. It is essential for caregivers to access important benefits and for families to take advantage of refundable payroll tax credits while remaining in compliance.

Tom Breedlove, Director of Care.com HomePay, the country’s leading household employment specialist, will share industry updates and information that advisors need to know to advise their clients.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize key legislation impacting clients with household employees

  • Identify opportunities to help clients mitigate tax, insurance, and legal risk

  • Recognize strategies to help household-employer clients save money

  • Demonstrate access to free tools and resources that can add value to your practice
